Habits That Survive Bad Weeks
The test of a habit is not how it feels on day three. It is whether it holds the week everything goes wrong.
Most habits are designed for your best self on a calm Tuesday. Then a deadline lands, someone gets sick, you travel — and the streak dies. The fix is to design for the bad week from the start.
Shrink it until it is almost silly
One page, five minutes, two push-ups. A habit that is too small to skip is a habit that survives. You can always do more on good days; the tiny version exists to protect the identity, not the outcome.
Plan the recovery, not just the streak
Decide in advance what happens when you miss a day, because you will. A rule as simple as never miss twice removes the spiral where one skipped day quietly becomes three weeks.
Review weekly, adjust monthly
Ten minutes on Sunday to ask what worked and what got in the way will do more than any tracking app. Habits do not need more motivation; they need maintenance.
